Life is a Thousand Word Essay

Charles M Schulz the creator of Peanuts once said:

“Sometimes I lie awake at night and I ask, “Is life a multiple choice test or is it a true or false test?” Then a voice comes to me out of the dark and says, “We hate to tell you this but life is a thousand word essay.”

I guess that is why we sometimes struggle in life. We misunderstand the type of test life is giving us! We are trying to answer true or false to questions that require of us not only to write a thousand word essay, but also to know how to write an essay. Like anything new in life we may stumble along feeling a little bit lost at first, but we inevitably get the hang of things when we keep on trying and refuse to give up. Persistence and perseverance are two very important keys to life.

There is a story of an African tribe which stumped anthropologists: this tribe, for centuries, managed to get a 100% success rate with their rain dance. Comparing them with other tribes who did not enjoy the same success rate, they couldn’t figure out what this one tribe was doing differently as the outward appearance of ritual, clothing and prayers were the same, until someone realised that this tribe simply danced UNTIL it rained. They never stopped. They never gave up. They kept at it until they achieved the results that they wanted.

How many times can you get up when life gets you down? How many times can you face rejection and failure? Do you have the ability to dance until it rains? Or have you, like Mr Schulz, discovered the secret of life: “. . . you just hang around until you get used to it”?
